Basic English

 

  • Grade 9
  • Length of Course: 1 year
  • Prerequisites:  None

 

Students will read selections in different genres and apply a variety of reading strategies, particularly interactive reading strategies, appropriate for reading the selections.  They will analyze literary elements and use a variety of strategies to read unfamiliar words and build vocabulary.  they will learn elements of grammar, usage, and style, use recursive writing processes to write in a variety of forms, and express and support responses to various types of texts.

 

 

Composition

 

  • Grade 10
  • Length of Course:  1 year
  • Prerequisites:  None

 

Students will read selections in different genres and apply a variety of reading strategies, particularly interactive reading strategies, appropriate for reading selections.  They will analyze literary elements and use a variety of strategies to read unfamiliar words and to build vocabulary.  Additionally, students will develop and refine an abiility to write narrative, expository, and persuasive texts, using a variety of forms, including journals, essays, poems, research reports, and research papers to express ideas appropriate to audience and purpose.

 

 

American Literature

 

  • Grade 11
  • Lengh of Course:  1 year
  • Prerequisites:  None

 

Students will develop an understanding of the background, purpose, and nature of the literature of the United States.  They will read and evaluate the time and life of American authors and read selections in a variety of genres.  They will develop techniques for writing both fiction and non-fiction.

 

 

Senior English

 

  • Grade 12
  • Length of Course: 1 year
  • Prerequisites:  None

 

Students will develop an understanding of the background, purpose, and nature of British literature.  They will read and evaluate the time and life of British authors and read selections in a variety of genres.  They will develop techniques for writing both fiction and non-fiction.

 

 

Yearbook

 

  • Grade 10-12
  • Length of Course:  1 year
  • Prerequisites:  Instructor approval

 

Students will develop knowledge and skills necessary to produce the school yearbook.  They will learn to use In Design software to create page layouts and Photoshop for importing digital pictures.  Photographers will learn procedures for operating digital cameras and organizing and filing pictures.  Students will sell ads, keep records of sponsors, and make ad boards.

 

 

Journalism

 

  • Grade 9-12
  • Length of Course:  1 year
  • Prerequisites:  Instructor approval

 

Students will develop knowledge and skills necessary to produce the school newspaper.  They will learn to use In Design software to create page layouts and Photoshop for importing digital pictures.  Photographers will learn procedures for operating digital cameras and organizing and filing pictures.
